This is the Buddha’s teaching on Buddha nature, and it starts with something simple: watch a baby learning to walk. They fall. They rise. They fall again. They have never walked before in their life – and yet, somehow, the ability is already inside them. They just haven’t realized it yet.
The Buddha looked at all of us the same way.
“All beings have Buddha nature.”
– Buddha, Mahaparinirvana Sutra
What Is Buddha Nature?
The Sanskrit term is tath膩gatagarbha – often translated as Buddha nature or Buddha essence. It appears throughout the Mahayana sutras, most directly in the Mahaparinirvana Sutra, where the Buddha states clearly that every sentient being – without exception – already possesses the seed of awakening within them.
This is not a reward to be earned. It is not a state reserved for monks, saints, or the spiritually advanced. It is the ground condition of every living being – present before practice begins, present even in confusion and suffering.
You are not trying to become something you are not. You are trying to realize what you already are.
The Baby and the Buddha
The baby does not know they will walk one day. They have no evidence yet. Every attempt ends on the floor. And still, something in them keeps trying – not from willpower, but from the simple fact that walking is already in their nature. It only needs time, practice, and patience to emerge.
The Buddha was once a baby too. The master was once a beginner. Every person you admire for their wisdom, their calm, their compassion – they were once exactly where you are standing now.
The only difference between where they were and where they arrived? Time. Practice. The refusal to mistake falling for failure. Progress here is rarely a straight line – it looks more like the baby’s unsteady steps than a smooth walk forward, and that unevenness is normal, not a sign that something is wrong.
Buddha Nature Means You Are Not Broken
One of the quiet cruelties of modern life is the persistent feeling that something is fundamentally wrong with us. That we are behind. That we have too much to fix. That others have something we were not given.
The Buddha’s teaching on Buddha nature is a direct answer to this. Not a comfort to make you feel better – a statement of fact. The capacity for clarity, compassion, and peace is not something you are trying to import from somewhere else. It is already here. It has always been here. What practice does is remove what covers it – not build what is missing.
You are not broken. You are not lacking. You are a baby learning to walk – and the walking is already in you.
What This Means for Daily Life
- Stop waiting until you are ready. The baby does not wait until they feel confident to try standing. Buddha nature does not require you to have it together first. You begin from where you are.
- See falling differently. Every time you lose your patience, act from fear, or fall short of who you want to be – that is not evidence that you lack Buddha nature. That is the practice revealing itself. The falling is part of the walking.
- Extend this to others. If every being has Buddha nature, then the person who frustrates you, the person you have written off, the person who seems unreachable – they are also that baby. Also still becoming. This is what the Buddhist teaching on compassion is rooted in.
- Trust the process more than the progress. The baby cannot measure how close they are to walking. They simply try again. The accumulation of trying is the path.
You already have everything you need inside you. You always did.
